Family class

Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in canada, 18 years of age or older, may sponsor close relatives or family members who want to become permanent residents of canada. Sponsors must promise to support the relative or family member and accompanying family members for a period of three to 10 years to help them settle in canada. Close family members may include a spouse or common law partner, dependent children, parents or grand-parents.

They must also sign a Sponsorship Agreement with their relative or family member that outlines their mutual commitments to each other. Sponsors are accountable for providing for their family members after arrival in Canada, and for making certain that they do not become dependent on the Canadian social aid. They must pledge to support the relative or family member and their accompanying family members for a period of 3-10 years to help them settle & reconcile to their new life in Canada.

Family members qualified for sponsorship are:

  • You may also sponsor one relative of any age if you do not have a family member from the list above whom you could sponsor or who is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older;
  • Parents and grandparents;
  • Dependent children, including adopted children;
  • Children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt;
  • Brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans, under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship; and any other relative if you have none of the above relatives or family members, either in Canada or abroad.
  • A son or daughter is dependent when the child: is under the age of 22 and does not have a spouse or common-law partner; became a full-time student before the age of 22 and has been substantially dependent on a parent for financial support since that time; became a spouse or common-law partner before the age of 22 and has been substantially dependent on a parent for financial support since that time; Or is financially dependent on a parent since before the age of 22 because of a disability.
Family sponsorships for any individual shifting his or her base to another country, the next major worry is to sponsor the immediate family. Like many other countries, canada also follows certain guidelines for family sponsorships. Under this program, close relatives and immediate family of a canadian citizen or permanent resident can migrate if they comply to few conditions.

The undertaking varies in duration depending on the family relationship between the sponsor and the person being sponsored to canada. Such an undertaking is a contract between the sponsor and the government: during the time period in which it is in force, sponsored family members are not allowed to receive any income support from the government.
